C A M E N S Architectural Group T he human need for shelter is basic and universal. People crave a place to call their own, a place where they can relax and unwind, entertain, and just be themselves. But when a house evokes a visceral reaction—a gasp at a ceiling detail, wonder at the view upon entering a room, or just a warmth that can only be felt and not described—it is truly a special experience. Over the course of his illustrious career, from commercial architecture to residential architecture in the Adirondacks and now in the Low Country and beyond, Marc Camens has designed homes that come with such an experience. How does he unfailing touch the hearts of his clients and their guests? By designing with people in mind. While it seems obvious that an architect would design homes for people, Marc goes a step beyond by tapping into the emotional needs of his clients, listening to what they want, of course, but also factoring in what they didn't realize they needed. Marc relishes the opportunity to work with clients who want to be heavily involved in the design process, although he has also worked with clients who can only visit the site a few times throughout the process. He often recalls the unique working relationships with his clients when he reminisces on his projects. One project involved working out of a law firm's conference room—Marc on one end of the table making drafting edits, the client on the other end, nodding approval between calls. Another required Marc and the homeowner to return to the neighborhood's review board multiple times as the board's requirements changed during building. Whether tackling obstacles or designing sophisticated details side-by-side, Marc's collaborative approach guarantees that his clients feel involved and supported through the process. It also guarantees they get exactly what they want, or understand directly from Marc why an idea cannot be executed due to geography, material availability, or neighborhood restrictions.
