J. WILKES SANTA MARIA VALLEY
PINOT NOIR
gourmet pairings
Cream of chanterelle
mushroom soup, with fresh
butter, shallots, and a touch
of good sherry goes well with
this wine. Finished the soup
with a golden puff pastry
floater.
tasting notes
Aromatics include ripe red berry fruits, cherry pie, kola nut,
white pepper, clove, and an intense earthy-spicy-savory-meaty
complexity. You'll taste bright, fruity, balanced, and quite
complex flavors. Finish shows cherry, rhubarb, and loamy, earthy
tannins.
winemaker's insight
Wes Hagen's first commercial Santa Maria Pinot Noir was made
with the conscious decision to use no new oak in the wine, to
show off the fruit and not the French accent. Sixteen months in,
100 percent neutral French oak gives the wine a purity and focus
that is purely Santa Maria Valley and Tepesquet Bench—the
Grand Cru of Santa Maria viticulture.
