five to 10 million years BCE. These soils tend to be alluvial and
less acidic than the other two AVAs and are associated with the
La Panza Range and the Simmler, Monterey, and Paso Robles
formations.
Rising to 2,000 feet-plus in some places, this district has the
highest elevation of any Central Coast wine production locale,
along with the largest diurnal temperature shifts. There is a
50-degree average between daytime highs and nighttime lows.
J. Wilkes produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Lagrein
from this land.

bounty of both Santa Maria and Paso Robles through its
memorable wines.
