87 SAN MIGUEL Going from film editing to winemaking is a long stretch. But for Academy Award-wining film editor, Joel Cox, the extension was natural. He applies the same meticulous and diligent approach to wine making as he does to a well-crafted movie scene. Cox who has worked with Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood on pretty much all of his films is honored to receive an Oscar for the film Unforgiven. For a relative newcomer the winery has gathered numerous awards for its Bordeaux-style blends. Starting with their very first release, Unforgiven (inspired by the film) that won Best in Class and a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Mystic Hills' hand-crafted wines showcase the special terroir that make Paso Robles and California's Central Coast so unique. The winery's Platinum and Gold medal winning red wines, Rosé, and Sauvignon Blanc are outstanding examples of impressive Bordeaux-style wines produced from the San Miguel region of Paso Robles appellation. For Cox and his team, it's a family affair and a hands-on approach to winemaking that can take up to three years from grape to bottle. However, for vineyard management and farming the family relies on Keith Roberts. "My farmer, he's the backbone," Cox comments on the veteran with more than 40 years of experience. The winery hosts several events throughout the year, including Movie Night with Joel Cox, as well as wine club members pick-up parties, new releases, and winemaker dinners.
