Monochrome Wines
PASO ROBLES
In a region known for big bold red wines, Monochrome stands out as the only
winery in Paso Robles dedicated exclusively to white wines. Appropriately
named for its "one color," the name also references black-and-white—or
monochrome—photography, which some people dismiss as less complex
and interesting than color yet can result in some of the most artistic and
memorable images. Similarly, some people dismiss white wines as simple
and one-dimensional, yet fine white wines can have as much character and
complexity as the best reds, and are arguably more challenging to make.
That's the inspiration for winemakers Dave McGee and Riley Hubbard.
Noticing that white wines were being underserved in the area, both literally
and figuratively, McGee set out on a mission to craft a portfolio of white
wines with the same level of effort, thought, and passion that most producers
reserve for their very best red wines.
The team produces blends from grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Albariño, Chenin Blanc, and Grenache
Blanc. Monochrome's first vintage was 2016, with fruit sourced from different
microclimates along the entire Central Coast, from vineyards ranging from
Arroyo Seco to Santa Barbara.
Monochrome's intimate tasting room is located in Tin City, Paso Robles'
hip enclave. Individual and educational group tastings for up to ten people
are held by appointment only and are led by the winemaker. Here white
wine aficionados can experience wines that are as flavorful, complex, and
interesting as the best reds.
