THE MODERN RESIDENCE
TOP LEFT: The front of the home features stepped retaining walls that
reveal a sunken garden and above-ground basement walls. An entry
bridge allows access to the front door above the garden.
BOTTOM LEFT : The home possesses myriad outdoor living spaces,
where the balconies and patios fully integrate outdoor and indoor
living, with multi-level planters adding color and acting as privacy
devices.
BELOW TOP: We designed a shed roof to provide passive solar
daylighting into the main living spaces while also providing south-
facing roofline for a PV array.
BELOW BOTTOM: The south side balcony features a Vari-Cool metal-
clad bamboo planter which acts as both a privacy screen and shading
device.
FACING PAGE TOP: Steeped in natural light, the minimalist kitchen
reflects the aesthetic of the home's architecture by prioritizing sleek
stainless steel, wood, and granite finishes. Dual islands were designed
to provide separate preparation space for the vegetarian in the
household.

FACING PAGE BOTTOM: The main living area is a modern, open-
concept room with bright, white walls to reflect the natural light along
with a two-sided, slate and heart-pine fireplace — and notably no TV.
The space directly links to the outdoors through the sliding doors that
lead onto the private patio.
