5 BELOW: The two-bedroom getaway has a public and a private side, with the living and dining space making up the public area. Here, homeowners can welcome visitors, and take in the view—the primary focus of the rooms. We designed with this sweeping vista in mind, and made sure that it wasn't blocked. Even the kitchen cabinets take up minimal space, with large windows on either side, to avoid obstructing the scenery. FACING PAGE TOP: At night, the retreat has a strong, monolithic quality. This is the private side of the home, facing the mountains. The mountains offer a feeling of protection even though the large windows give exposure. FACING PAGE CENTER: The bedroom stays true to the overall design of the residence; we used clean lines and capitalized on the outdoor setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows add to the calming effect and allow the surroundings to become part of the room. We made the space so connected with its site, that the grass can grow right up to the windows. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: Because this house doesn't have a lot in the way of square footage, we made sure that every space had an impact, including the bathroom. We used natural light to capture the beauty of the materials and add to the feeling of being outdoors. The shower is daylit from above, letting the sunshine pour in. Photos by Morgan Howarth
