FACING PAGE LEFT: Bump-outs in the kitchen and guest room mean you can
look not just out of the windows, but also below and above. After 25 years of
living in a traditional home, the owners decided it was time to do something
modern and fun.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM: Each of the four floors has a glass bridge running
front to back, and a translucent stairwell hung by steel cables is encased in
glass, acoustically separating it from the living areas.
ABOVE LEFT: Surrounded by historic colonials, this DC home stands out like a
shimmering, misty mirage. After stripping the structure down to just brick and
glass, we wrapped the exterior in perforated stainless steel to get this effect.
ABOVE RIGHT: The teal spiral staircase leads up to the roof deck, which has
amazing, 360-degree views of three major DC churches. At night, the twinkling
lights are just spectacular.
RIGHT: The pivoting front door is speckled with divots, some of which are
eyeholes placed at different levels so that kids and pets can also look out.
