404 THE MODERN RESIDENCE "Modern architecture can be expressed through the careful and innovative integration of wood, glass, stone and metal—all with clean lines and the absence of ornament." —Debra Cedeno ABOVE: This Modern Farmhouse is nestled on a heavily wooded lot with close proximity to the ocean, nature paths, and a fresh water pond. Therefore, we designed the home to easily support indoor and outdoor entertaining for the owners and their guests with elevated decks and covered, screened porches. Private bedroom wings feature windows on all four sides, and the master suite and guest room connect to the center gathering space by means of floor-to-ceiling glass connectors that offer a unique source of natural light to mark the transition from one space to the next. Photo by Wayne Smith LEFT: The exposed rafters on the covered front porch along with the painted clapboard and swing reference classic farmhouse details, offering a unique juxtaposition to the modern glass connector that marks the transition to a different part of the house. The brilliant- blue entry door is a thoughtful reference to the owner's family history. The large expanse of glass in the main living space provides a true connection to the adjacent woods, which was a very important design feature for the homeowners. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: The kitchen incorporates clean lines and optimizes natural sunlight—and we used continuous open, floating shelves for both a functional and poetic effect. A screened porch dining area and lounge are conveniently located next to the kitchen and serve as a natural overflow for guests in any weather. Photos by Ethan Stead
