434 THE MODERN RESIDENCE BELOW: A series of design decisions responded to the impact of climate change on the coast. The fact that Mother Nature is in control lead us to design defensively by raising the house 10 feet on piers, with hurricane-resistant openings. Nature is a major character in this production—after all, this house replaces one that succumbed to Hurricane Sandy. FACING PAGE: The house's organization can be reduced to a few sweeping gestures coalescing around the notion of two joined structures: the house and the porch. The porch is elevated to a co-equal status, providing a protected southeast view to the bay and of which all rooms share. Photographs by Don Paine
