504 THE MODERN RESIDENCE ABOVE LEFT: We were able to save most of the trees on the site that otherwise would have been torn down by a standard building. The surveyor actually measured incorrectly, so we compensated by cutting two feet into the house so that one tree could survive. ABOVE RIGHT: Though there are neighbors nearby on both sides, I wanted my home to feel like it's all alone in the forest. But in reality, you can be at the White House in only 20 minutes. LEFT: The entire house is hanging by red steel cables that go 35 feet into the ground. It's like a suspension bridge, floating with the aid of 60-foot steel columns and rock-filled cannisters that prevent the house from moving in strong weather. The translucent walls allow light in, but anyone outside can't see in. FACING PAGE : The ground floor of my home is like one big loft—even the 360-degree fireplace is open. The aqua spiral staircase spans all four floors, and also facilitates return air flow. Photographs by Ken Wyner
