THE MODERN RESIDENCE
BELOW: The Oaks, a property within an ancient oak grove on Martha's Vineyard, wraps an existing hilltop knoll rather than sitting atop it. This view of the house
from the deck captures the roof layers, which create clerestories between them to bring in the light from above. We implemented untreated cedar shiplap siding,
so it will weather to gray and match the natural textures of the woods.
FACING PAGE: The rich and layered nature of the structure unfolds in the dining area and kitchen, where the stone floor and the overhang extends from outside
to inside to blur the boundary between the two. By using exterior materials and columns indoors, we created an additional element of ambiguity.
