314 THE MODERN RESIDENCE FACING PAGE & BELOW: The Japanese concept of shakkei, or borrowed scenery, informs the design of this Virginia Beach house, which was completed in 2016. The site is characterized by a strong sense of horizontality, formed by the foreground waterway of Linkhorn Bay, the line of woods on the opposite shore, and the sky. A linear fountain strikes a line along the entry path and appears to slide beneath the house, reappearing as an exterior pool at the far side of the foyer. A trellis complements the fountain and pool by extending the view through the house, while concrete walls reinforce the property's lines. In tandem with the green agenda of Hays + Ewing, the gardens designed by Kennon Williams Landscape Studio utilize native species to reduce the need for irrigation. Photographs by Prakash Patel
