BELOW & FACING PAGE: The 3,000 square-foot house belongs to a noted maritime photographer. He wanted to create a home,
that while inland, would be reminiscent of the simple boathouse buildings that formed the basis of his professional documentary
photographic work. The result is an "architecture of artful resistance" in a planned community where strict design guidelines are
geared toward the traditional romantic architectural styles. Rather than being constrained by these guidelines, the project espouses
modern regional romanticism that instead celebrates the rich formal and material traditions of vernacular buildings characterized by
modesty, simplicity, and clarity.
