Solstice Planning and Architecture
SARASOTA, FL
Jonathan Parks, AIA, is very much connected to where he lives, and it
has both inspired and defined him as an architect. Located in Sarasota,
Solstice Planning and Architecture was the result of Jonathan's childhood
visits to his aunt's Florida home in the 1970s, where he admired the
distinct look and feel of the local regional architecture. The city has
a specific architectural history that captured—and maintained—his
attention.
Led by renowned architects Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph in the
1950s, Sarasota experienced a surge in modern design throughout the
midcentury. The structures showed off modern design features, using
natural materials, sleek lines and geometrical forms, and expressed an
appreciation for functionality. You couldn't find anything quite like this in
the United States at the time.
Jonathan began Solstice Planning and Architecture more than 15 years
ago and has built the practice on his strong reputation—he and his team
didn't advertise for years. Solstice is known for clarity of concept and
quality of work. In fact, Jonathan has received more than 70 regional and
national honors. His goal is to design memorable, timeless homes, with
emphasis placed not only on the tangible, such as volume and shape,
but also on immaterial elements of transparency, light, and space.
