THE MODERN RESIDENCE
"Our conviction that good design contributes
to better living is at our core."
—Craig Davisson
ABOVE: The Faulkner Residence is located on a half-acre of land at the
water's edge; the site fronts a country road that was once orange groves and
is now residential. The design concept for this residence was based on three
things: maximizing views, accommodating the resident's daily life, and using
conventional building materials to meet a tight budget. The second phase
allowed for a detached workshop to accommodate the space, machinery,
and tools for vintage automotive restoration, woodworking, and metals.
LEFT: The house plan is unconventionally stacked with living and dining areas
and the kitchen located on the second level and bedrooms on the first. The
second floor, accessed by an exterior and interior stairway, has panoramic
views of the adjacent tributary and surrounding woods. Locating the living
areas on the second floor allows for a 14-foot interior volume and south-facing
clerestory windows for maximum daylight exposure.
FACING PAGE TOP: Together with the homeowner, Studio9 explored
expanded design solutions that went far beyond the conventional but still
resonated in a sophisticated and contemporary manner—from the inside out.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM: The kitchen is small and functional with smart design
elements including built-in storage and a refrigerator nook to maximize space.
