THE MODERN RESIDENCE
ABOVE & LEFT: To personalize the design for our clients, a structural engineer
and an executive, all the interior finishes were selected to highlight the steel
and concrete. Third-grade white maple floors brighten the space, while the
blackness of the sap accentuates the exposed structural materials. Gallery-style
lighting illuminates the artwork throughout the home. All the existing furniture
was integrated into the design, including two concrete lounge chairs that
command attention at the base of the stair. These chairs were discovered at a
local gallery and originally intended for the client's office, but were a seamless
addition to the home aesthetic.
FACING PAGE: Metal is the star of the great room. A steel hearth and wall
element surround the pivoting fireplace and an adjoining steel shelf stores
firewood and displays art. The kitchen island counter exhibits a single plate
of quarter-inch steel, bending in a graceful fold to the maple floors. Steel is
repeated in the stove backsplash while glass mosaic at the sink creates texture
and captures light.
