THE MODERN RESIDENCE
BELOW: Freestanding architectural elements serve as partitions in the spacious living area, dividing a dining room and the upper- and lower-level living rooms. These
spaces are unified under an undulating ceiling mimicking the site's slope and focusing views to the exterior and scenic creek beyond. A fireplace separates the dining
area from the living room, and a large console acts as a divider between the upper and lower level. We designed a sculptural steel and wood stair to provide vertical
circulation and act as a hinge between the public and private spaces of the home. The master bedroom is on the lower floor and two children's bedrooms and a play
area are on the upper.
FACING PAGE: To simplify the interior and emphasize the views, we edited the material palette to a few selections for the entire house. Large format terra cotta
flooring is used consistently, unifying the ground level and mitigating glare from the many windows. Generous use of maple warms the indoor spaces and forms the
basis for a variety of design elements: millwork, paneling, and as the undulating ceiling plane of the living room.
