THE MODERN RESIDENCE
BELOW & FACING PAGE:: The Hart Woodson House sits on more than an acre, high on a clifftop above Lake Austin. To the west is the
view of the lake, which isn't ideal for solar orientation. Naturally, the homeowner wanted the house to face the water, but with intense
Texas heat, the direct sun exposure was a challenge that had to be addressed. The largest living space is oriented east-west with only
one narrow, west-facing exposure. A retractable shade is automatically activated by a sensor that tracks the sun's movement across the
sky, adjusting the shade in response to the amount of direct solar heat gain.
