279 "Our style is rooted in history but leans toward contemporary. We're open to everything." —Fred Wilson FACING PAGE TOP: The homeowners of this Evanston, Illinois, house were enamored with a very specific high-end Italian cabinetry. Because of that, we prioritized the cabinetry in the budget and made practical, more cost- effective decisions in other areas of the kitchen. The standard, stainless steel hood and puck lighting for example, make ideal complements to the cabinets without overspending. The staircase has a linear, Alvar Aalto-like quality that can also be found on the home's street-facing façade. Elements of Scandinavian design that can be seen on the front of the home include clean lines and sleek, simplistic shapes. Light played a key role to changing the space, and we snuck it in by adding windows just behind the cabinets. You can see the silhouette of the dishes as the light shines through. Modern elements such as this gave the kitchen a whole new feel. The large grey steel beam was added to the façade and carried throughout the interior to support bearing walls that were removed, and a cast concrete countertop provides a strong edge to define the kitchen workspace.
