BELOW & FACING PAGE: The design of this San Juan island weekend retreat is guided by its waterfront, wooded site. Indoor-outdoor
connections are emphasized with expanses of glass to the view, materials such as corten steel and concrete that are continuous from
exterior to interior, and columns whose forms echo the shape of the trees. An important design directive was to deal with the site in
an environmentally sensitive way. A grass-crete driveway and grass-paver patios blur and minimize hard surfaces on the site, and the
thoughtful treatment of the shoreline is now used as an example by the local jurisdiction for developments at the water's edge.
