68 THE MODERN RESIDENCE ABOVE: The entry foyer ceiling is defined by a wood-veneer cantilevered cube which floats from the front to back of the building. Strong shapes and planes are defined with organic materials—walnut, aluminum, oak—expressing timeless design. LEFT: Look through the floating stairs and you weightlessly ascend over a reflecting pool which starts at the front of the residence, flows under the foyer to the main terrace, and finally cascades into the swimming pool at the rear terrace, all of which float above the massive granite outcropping. FACING PAGE TOP: The kitchen, located in the middle of the residence, floats at the sink base which overlooks an intimate eating courtyard beyond, complete with daily grill and tree- lined terrace. The space is centered on a 15-foot clerestory light well with a suspended light fixture cluster. High-end laminate cabinetry and quartz countertops are accented with Ann Sacks mosaic tile splash. The butler pantry is tucked beyond. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: A 14-foot tall automatic sliding-glass room corner connects the main gathering room to the outside terrace. Sky, trees, and water complete the sensual experience of connected spaces. Strong forms and solid materials define the floors, walls, and ceiling. Floating copper panels, cut stone, and limestone embellish the fireplace. Photographs by Kat Alves "It's about the people. I don't design houses for awards." —Donald J. Fugina Jr.
