With so much attention concentrated on the kitchen and main living spaces of a home, sometimes
the concept of a formal dining room can get lost in the shuffle—or at the very least, pushed to
the side. I often see clients more or less forget these spaces, and in so doing, they ignore the
elements that will best create a comfortable and classic space in which to dine and entertain. So,
when there is a separate dining room in a home, I really like to bring focus to the space and truly
celebrate it.
From the dining table and the fabric on the dining chairs, to the wall treatments and lighting, it's
all about ensuring that the segments of the space come together as both a functional and beautiful
experience.
Sources of inspiration may come from unexpected places, too. One dining room I designed was
bordered by a huge wine room. So a glass wall that revealed the vino sanctuary became the
focal backdrop, creating depth and relevance to the space, while a curated choice of flooring,
light fixtures, and chairs comfortably flowed within it.
And, just like kitchens, new elements of design are always coming into play with a dining room.
Fresh fabrics and textures, statement light fixtures, new styles of seating, warmth-inducing rugs—all
of these can be designed to be unique to the end user. There is no limit to how creative you can
you be—even in the dining room!
