7 For me, variety really is the spice of life—and of a living room, too. Indeed, this main hub of the home may be the most diverse space that I design—and that's precisely what is most exhilarating about it. No two living spaces will ever be remotely alike in my book, as each design is deeply informed by my clients' unique definitions of "living." For some, that might mean a relaxing haven enveloped in undeniable comfort. For others, an elegant yet inviting extension of the kitchen offers entertaining space for both large and small gatherings. Still others may wish to blur the lines between the interior and exterior by fully celebrating the surrounding view. Regardless, as the central unifying space—where the living happens!—these rooms set the pace and tone for the home and should relate appropriately to the rest of the house. As such, it's important that surrounding spaces flow seamlessly in and around the living room through strategic layout and organization of furnishings as well as the artful mix of textures and colors. Practicality is a fundamental design element that I abide by when it comes to breathing life into a living room. Space planning, such as whether a room should be divided into two separate living environments for dual purposes, is key to ensuring the most functional, livable room. Proper lighting, and how it relates to the natural light in the space, is another key fundamental that can make all the difference—especially in a living room. It directs the eye and sets the mood, especially as the ambience changes from sunup to sundown. Bringing together interesting elements that reflect clients' personal stories, travels, and personalities is another aspect I love to incorporate in a living room. Only then do the spaces really tell their own story through design and truly become a relatable extension of their inhabitants. living the dream
