73 the great outdoors From city apartments to sprawling country estates, outdoor spaces are relevant no matter their size or location, as they can always serve as an agreeable extension of the interior home. These integral spaces compellingly blend the outside with the inside and serve as a highlight that gives a house extra impact and flair. They are much like the exclamation point of a property! With an equal focus on indulgence and livability, an outdoor environment provides the ultimate setting for entertaining while emphasizing the beauty of its surroundings. Striking exterior areas that are lavished with the same richly appointed furnishings, materials, and amenities that are used in the interior only make the space all the more dynamic and welcoming. Products and technology continue to evolve to make these spaces an even more exciting design feature—from giant sliding doors to disappearing walls, or simply a wall of windows that opens the home to the great outdoors. Exterior kitchens and entertaining areas have also come a long way with state- of-the-art appliances, ventilated grills and pizza ovens, running water, climate control, elaborate fire features, flat-screen televisions, in-pool lounges, and open-air theaters. After all, if outdoor spaces include the same custom features as indoor rooms, they are more likely to become a part of everyday life. One of the amazing things about living in Arizona, and especially Tucson, are the incredible views from just about anywhere in the city. So I especially love creating outdoor spaces in this part of the country. Magnificent, rugged mountains where desert flora and wild creatures coexist in the middle of urban sprawl become art, and these beautiful backdrops and panoramic vistas are incredibly inspirational. Taking a backyard's raw, arid land and transforming it into a desert oasis is so rewarding. No matter the setting, though, my most memorable outdoor rooms come to fruition by approaching the design from a destination perspective. My goal is always to create a luxury resort experience at home. With stunning views across a refreshing pool, along with an alfresco dining spot and various comfortable seating and lounge options, homeowners and guests alike can enjoy sunning, conversation, or just relaxing almost every day of the year.
