a little something special
Specialty rooms are the mystery door of a home—they are that surprise "wow" factor,
and no two spaces will ever be remotely alike! Each design is deeply informed by my
clients' personal definitions of living well. For some, that might mean a relaxing theater
enveloped in comfort. For others, it's an elegant yet inviting wine room that serves as a
perfect extension of the living room or kitchen to entertain groups both large and small.
And for still others, a favorite pastime or leisure activity might serve as the inspiration for
this space.
Bringing together interesting elements that reflect homeowners' stories, travels, and
personalities are what I find most interesting about designing specialty rooms. Only then
do the spaces really tell their own stories through design and truly become a relatable
extension of the client. After all, they're called specialty rooms for a reason—and the
interior design should be innovative and one-of-a-kind with specifically selected features.
These spaces are always memorable for their deeply personal influence, but they can also
come equipped with a good dose of impressive impact too. I once had the privilege of
designing a 14,000-square-foot home that included an ultra-luxury theater with seating for
12 along with an adjacent game room, seating area, and bar plus an extraordinary powder
room. Visible from the theater was also a customized garage filled with exotic cars. That
proved to be quite the specialty annex of the home!
