With the bride being from Costa Rica, we had a fabulous opportunity to bring some South American
flavor to an otherwise traditional Indian wedding. While the couple married first in Costa Rica, their
stateside wedding was a chance to introduce her family to Hindu customs—with a twist, of course.
We began with the sangeet, where the delicious food was presented at canopied stations spaced
around the room. Carts bearing favors for the guests were scattered throughout, which made taking
a circuit to mingle feel a little like a treasure hunt. The mandap for the ceremony was crisp, modern,
and adorned with flickering candles, a reflection of the bride's fashionable style. It was the couple's
greatest wish that there be an elephant at their ceremony, but since the wedding took place during
a 99-plus-degree Houston summer we devised the next best thing. Guests paraded around with
colorful stuffed elephants mounted on sticks for the indoor baraat, which in the end wasn't such a
compromise considering outside it was Houston in July.
