For the Love of the Sea
O
n an unusual site with an inland creek and a vast view of the marshes, this Charleston home
honors the water in design and décor. In true Camens fashion, the home captures the view of
the water from every room, as the kitchen window wall flows into the dining room and living room,
and then on to the screened porch.
The kitchen is an example of Marc's dedication to designing a home for the people who live within
it. During the first phase of planning and design, the couple revealed that she did the cooking and
he did the cleaning up afterward. To accommodate the couple's significant height difference, Marc
designed the cooking spaces—where the wife would spend most of her time—lower than the sink
area, where the husband cleaned up afterward. Marc also incorporated a dining table into the kitchen
island. It's the perfect place for two people to sit and share a meal together. A larger dining room
accommodates seating for family and guests, while an intimate sitting area next to the kitchen island
is perfect for coffee and conversation in the morning.
Throughout the space, little nods to the owners' appreciation for the ocean can be found. Metal
details at the tops of columns and the metal truss work in the living room give the space an ocean
liner feel. A second-level outdoor balcony facilitates even more contemplative moments while
enjoying the water steps away.
