BELOW TOP: This couple's forever home is oriented around family—they have several grandchildren who visit often—so it was important that no room felt too shut off.
Widening the doorway to the dining room and adding a huge island make everything feel more welcoming, as does the cozy fireplace with marble surround. Their son-
in-law is an architect, and the decorative support beams were his idea.
BELOW BOTTOM: Black, white, and lots of texture inform the kitchen of this brand-new construction about 25 minutes south of Austin. The husband is an artist—he
contributed the stained wood vent hood and was very hands-on about the building details. Two different patterns of handmade, hand-glazed terra cotta tile were chosen
for the backsplash, complementing the black-and-white veined silestone countertops. Another of my companies, Troo Design, specializes in cabinetry, so we constructed
all the storage here.
