137 LEFT, BELOW & FACING PAGE: When we designed this kitchen, we accommodated the husband and wife's separate requests. As the main cook, she wanted her work spaces open and clear of grazers. We expanded the room by four feet and moved the ref rigerator away f rom her prep area. This let us add a wine serving and tasting area, which is what the husband wanted. We moved the cooktop to a long wall to maximize space and to serve as a focal point, and augmented the island, moving all seating to one side. "Fantasy Black Leather" was used to fabricate the plant trough behind the sink, as well as all countertops and surfaces. The backsplash is hand-glazed subway tile and an elongated hexagon shape was used with the same finish for a subtle accent at the cooktop. Designed by Vermont's Simon Pearce, the light fixture serves as functional art in the room. Repurposed wood beams became display shelves at the beverage center, "legs" on the island, and supports for the custom range hood and corbels. Virginia Cabinetry matched that wood for three sides of the island and for the wine storage cabinets at the top of the beverage center.
