179 Dining Spaces D ining rooms have a reputation as the gathering space for big holiday meals and dinner parties—but why limit the room to so few occasions? They are also ideal for family game night, wine night with the girls, or formal tea time. Dining rooms have the ability to make any get-together feel special because it's not a room that you use every day. When my team and I design a dining room for homeowners, we think of these possibilities and consider the specific ways they will use and enjoy the space. And, of course, the room must be able to seat eight or more people comfortably with a table and chairs that are conducive to lingering conversations. A few distinct elements can give a dining room personality—keeping in mind that the days of overly coordinated spaces are gone. Consider a singular dramatic element: chandelier, statement wallpaper, interesting table linens, unique chairs, mismatched tableware, or creative napkin rings. Eclectic centerpieces can be left on the table year-round, or you can add seasonal f resh flowers to keep the room inviting and bright. Accent chairs in eye-catching colors can also add character to the space. Lighting can make or break your dining room, so don't overlook this feature if you're remodeling or designing yours. Dimmer switches are a must, and if your chandelier doesn't provide adequate light, consider adding sconces, lamps on the credenza, or recessed lighting.
