347 FACING PAGE TOP: A dated lower-level entertainment space was ready for a ref resh. Wide-plank hardwood replaced an unfashionable multi-colored slate. A shined coat of Venetian plaster troweled onto the ceiling helped reflect light into the space. A talented artist, Melinda Bender, covered the walls and ceiling in "graffiti" of the family's names, birthdates, other important dates, and phrases, making this awkward corner became the perfect space for a few pinball machines. The black-and-white striped velvet panel adds sophistication and can be removed in case they ever switch out the pinball games. Custom art f rom the Netherlands adds a pop of color and serves as the backdrop to the ping-pong table made of solid walnut with a handsome leather net and paddles. This room was honored with the top National Award Design by IDS. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: On the edge of the shore, this one-of-a-kind Lake Minnetonka boat house is a relaxing recreational spot. The tranquil sounds of the waves crashing against the shore make this a magical haven for family and f riends. Original wood clads the walls and a padded upholstered wall was added to display custom-f ramed photographs that the client had taken on enchanting trips. Striking embroidered upholstery enhances the comfy rocking chairs while an American Leather sleeper enveloped in a neutral stripe encourages guests to kick back and stay awhile. This room was honored with the top National Award Design by IDS. Photographs by Bill Diers Interiors by Kamarron Design, Inc., Minneapolis, MN, page 387
