ABOVE: I believe that green homes should be just as beautiful and luxurious as any
other type of home. The Haw River Home is net positive—it produces all the energy
it needs and then some—yet also has elements that pamper the family. It features
a floating private deck off the primary suite, an oversized tub with a corner-window
view by a fireplace in the primary bathroom, and a soaking pool with an integral hot
tub overlooking the rapids, among other features.
LEFT TOP, LEFT BOTTOM & FACING PAGE: Considering the magnitude of the climate
crisis we are facing worldwide, building sustainably is the only choice. Perched on
a wooded hill above the picturesque rapids, the award-winning Haw River House
includes geothermal heating and cooling and a roof-mounted photovoltaic system
to generate energy. It also has triple-glazed, European passive house windows and
doors. The house was designed to incorporate sunlight and cross ventilation as well as
to provide an immediate indoor-outdoor connection f rom every space.
