5 Urban Residences ABOVE: It was important to strike the perfect balance between old and new with the home's interior. I let the antique components shine without becoming slavish to their details. In the kitchen you'll see the windows trimmed in original wood f rames, but the modern kitchen, designed in collaboration with Space Theory, is full of clean lines and simplicity. Contemporary cabinets and modern glass tile work beautifully with the home's older elements without competing for attention. FACING PAGE: Located on the third floor, the spa-like bathroom, parlor, and living room continue the careful blending of old and new. The mahogany mantle, fireplace, and mirror in the living room are all original to the home, as well as the brick wall. We stripped, cleaned, and restored it all to serve as a focal point in the room. Modern furniture and ceramic artwork—which I made myself years ago—give the room its contemporary edge. Photographs by Ashok Sinha See more about Batliboi Studios, Inc. on page xx
