ABOVE & FACING PAGE: This addition/renovation to an existing Cape Cod-style home leverages the fundamentals of sustainable and passive solar design. The overall design
concept is that of a modern treehouse. To that end, an existing attic was expanded to incorporate the kitchen, living room, and dining room at the third floor, which, with an
elevated exterior porch, created an overlook to the Arlington, Virginia, neighborhood. The street façade of the new addition was rotated south to anticipate vertical solar panels.
