ABOVE, LEFT & FACING PAGE: Raw concrete, steel, glass, and cedar were used
for this 18,000-sqaure-foot home and pool house in HoHoKus, New Jersey.
Largely inspired by the client's desire to pay homage to her Japanese upbringing,
we worked to ease the tension between the hard, streamlined edges of our
architecture and the drastic contrast with the surrounding landscape. The pool
house, elevated and designed with a traditional engawa, allows for a meditative
quality and further eases the relationship of structure to landscape. As meditation
is an important part of their lives, our client requested water features throughout
the property. Our response was to create a lazy river surrounding an island where
the pool house would double as a yoga and meditation studio. This distinctive and
unique residential feature truly encapsulates our design intention of harmony
between architecture and environment.
