5 DSDG Architects Sarasota, FL ABOVE: Betonhaus is positioned on a narrow linear site on the Gulf Coast inland waterway. The constraints of this site focused the residential layout into a linear shotgun form. Rather than a deterrent, the space gave us a ton of design opportunities including larger overhangs, more glass, and sleek, thin roof lines. The rear of the design contains the home's critical spaces and becomes transparent with sliding-glass doors flooding the home with indirect natural light. The grounds around the residence continue the linear footprint. Tropical greenery and a lush backdrop become just as much of the home as the raw materials. FACING PAGE: Guests were an important consideration for this spacious modern estate overlooking a mainland yacht basin. The five-bedroom main house reaches its wings toward the water as a two-story guest house guards the street access. Upon entering the estate, a royal palm tree-lined soccer pitch runs along the driveway to a motor court. Short-run staircases raise visitors to an elevated plinth and a virtually unobstructed water vista f rom the f ront door. PREVIOUS PAGE: Located on a private beach, Puesta del Sol is a three-story home design that maximizes the small buildable footprint area, making the home feel much larger than it is. It masterfully soaks up every sunset, or puesta del sol, over the Gulf of Mexico. The connection to the beach and Gulf broadens the perceived space of the home to include the water.
