147 BUTZ + KLUG architecture Boston, MA ABOVE, FACING PAGE & PREVIOUS PAGE: Located in Beacon Hill, this site has a zero-lot line, meaning that the building extends to the edge of the lot and there is no exterior space at ground level. The house was originally built in the late 19th century as a stable, and converted to a car repair shop in the 1920s. It is also a very deep building, and getting light into the interior of the building without compromising usable space was the primary challenge. We created a two-story interior atrium lit f rom above by a courtyard paved with walkable glass, which was a first for a residential building in Boston. Our aspiration was to suffuse the atrium with diffused daylight and yet be aware of passing clouds. The home's primary bathroom is adjacent to the courtyard above.
