187 ABOVE & FACING PAGE: We designed and built the Shah-Arumugaswamy Residence largely out of repurposed sea containers. Set in Maryland, the sea containers can withstand even the harshest weather. The painted corrugated corten steel offers a one-of-a-kind exterior that is as eye-catching as it is practical. Using the sea containers instead of traditional materials reduced building costs by as much as 30 percent while immensely boosting ecological satisfaction. RIGHT TOP & BOTTOM: Peace and tranquility fill the interior with warm Japanese minimalism throughout the design, providing simple lines, container wood floor-seat dining, and a Japanese bow used as wall art. Nine-foot ceilings and welded-open doors add a sense of openness—an attribute that is much appreciated in a home with young children. Varied locations of energy-saving glass keep one in full synchronicity with the yearly pathways of the sun. Photographs by Dan Westergren See more about Travis Price Architects on page 464
