ABOVE & FACING PAGE: A single-story home for a retired couple, the Zigzag House is organized around the notion of a path meandering through a landscape. A
two-story covered entry garden forms an exterior room, which initiates this path through the house as continuous with the outside landscape. Inside, the path
divides the home along the east-west axis, inviting one to move through the sun-drenched social spaces in the southern part of the home while sheltering the
sleeping spaces in the northern wing. The form of the roof bends along this axis as well, producing a dynamic relationship with the gently sloping land. At the back,
large corner window boxes project beyond the exterior envelope of the house, drawing panoramic views of the field and forest into the living spaces. Although
thoroughly modern in spirit, the architecture of the Zigzag House is inspired by the vernacular buildings and landscape of Maine, where the architect grew up and
the owners have lived for over 30 years.
