120 actual / office architecture Brooklyn, NY ABOVE & FACING PAGE: Oriented in relation to the rolling hills of its site and views of surrounding mountain ranges, the Sleeve House is conceived as two elongated volumes—a smaller inner volume sleeved into a larger outer—sitting on a cast-in-place concrete base. The home's public spaces are on a grand scale, finished with exposed concrete and charred wood, a traditional Japanese process called shou sugi ban, which leaves wood highly resistant to weather and rot. The private spaces are on an intimate scale with more typical domestic finishes. The experience of moving between these two types of spaces is like moving between two different worlds.
