ABOVE & FACING PAGE TOP: I had the opportunity to design the project of a lifetime with Sleeping Indian Ranch in Ridgeway, Colorado. Nestled into 30,000 acres in the Rocky
Mountains' Cimarron Range, my design intent was to create a log structure that complemented the land's natural beauty. Inspired by Old World National Park architecture, this
was my first log project, and it is still one of the largest log structures in the country at 61,000 square feet, and the first to be constructed f rom reclaimed "fire killed" logs f rom the
Yellowstone fires. This project has strengthened the significance of "real" log architecture and has received an AIA Honor Award.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM: The 42-foot-high great room ceiling highlights the post-and-beam log construction with no hidden steel. Our office designed the log-scissor trusses to
extend to double posts at each side that extend 12 feet below the floor to create a unique flying buttress structural system that eliminated the need for typical shear walls, allowing
for large windows to overlook the spectacular vistas downrange toward Telluride.
