409 ABOVE & FACING PAGE: Tuscan influence began in other countries as far back as the early 1600s when foreigners examined Tuscan architecture and decided to bring these concepts home with them. This style reached its peak in the desert during the mid-1990s and is still evolving today. This client's desire was to create a classic Tuscan style with modern materials that would be relevant for a young growing family. Masterfully manipulating historical materials into modern textures and shapes, we created what we now call Modern Tuscan. Plaster techniques were infused with metallics, antique mirrors are paired with high lacquer finishes, LED lighting is complemented by hand-cut woodblocks, barn doors are made in glass kilns, and wood floors are replaced with porcelain plank tile. The Italian Tuscan Villa is not going away, it just takes experts in this historical style, to reimagine and reinvent this beloved aesthetic.
