ABOVE, RIGHT & FACING PAGE: Views and light play important roles in
all our designs. On the Butterfly House, an effortless butterfly roof floats
over the home and defines the distinctive design. The simple act of
tilting the roof up opens the home to the surrounding views. The angle
of the butterfly roof was calculated to open the inside of the home to
just above the mountain top beyond while also providing a sufficient
angle for the hidden photovoltaic panels. Water f rom the butterfly roof is
collected at each end of the home, and when it rains, these cantilevered
elements create waterfall features. A long lap pool and two-sided
fireplace serve as the center of the main living area. At the interior low
point of the butterfly roof, the structure is exposed and defines the main
circulation path of the project. A continuous band of concrete between
the wood flooring helps to further define the central axis of the home.
