ABOVE & LEFT: The Berkshire Pond House in Becket, Massachusetts is located on a densely
wooded sloping site and this family's weekend home embraces the stunning views of a beautiful
pond and the Berkshire Hills beyond. A gravel courtyard and stone steps lead to the glass entry
doors, where exterior wood siding continues inside to blur the distinction between the interior
and exterior. The main interior space is used for living, dining, and a two-story-tall kitchen, which
acts as the metaphorical heart of the house.
FACING PAGE: The home was conceived as a folded volumetric "sheet" enclosure that wraps into
itself to form the major interior spaces while integrating into the landscape—thus, responding
to the environment while leaving much of the site undisturbed. At the back of the house, a
screen porch extends off the dining area to look out over the pond and surrounding woods.
Second-floor spaces include a primary bedroom suite with private deck areas along with four
children's bedrooms. A large terrace is located off the ground floor, which acts as an "outdoor
room" for children's activities with planned access to a future dock for boating, swimming, and
family gatherings.
