ABOVE & FACING PAGE: The materials have to make sense, in both form and function, and we put a great deal
of thought and planning into that. For the Mountain Retreat, we opted for a metal-clad fireplace chimney
that supports the end of the upper volume. There is open air under the upper box so the glass corner floats
above the trees. Deep overhangs help protect the house f rom extreme weather conditions and send water
further away f rom the foundation. Lexan roofing provides protection to the patio and allows light and views
to pass through. As you make your way around the home, the spaces inside inform the overall massing and
rooflines. The change in materials also responds to the volumes created.
