380 ABOVE & FACING PAGE LEFT: When working on mountainside projects, creating a synergy between the home's design and structure with the natural site and topography is often what defines the success of a project. The extreme nature of the PT House's site challenged us on how to gently place a large home in the steep natural landscape. The house appears nestled into the surrounding boulders as a single-story home when, in fact, three full levels have been carefully placed into the mountainside. Natural stone ties the mass walls of the house to the site, while cantilevered patios float above the desert floor, providing elegant entertaining spaces. FACING PAGE RIGHT: The exterior forms of the house are expressed within the project's interior volumes and elements. Glass walls of the living spaces hover above the floating patios and the sloped roofs open the interior spaces to surrounding views. The main hallway reveals the form of the roof, which acts as a rainwater harvesting system, solar collector, and patio space. Daylight f rom the central skylights travels through the stairwell to reach the floors below. Photographs by Rick Brazil See more about Koss design + build on page 460 Koss design+build Phoenix, AZ
