ABOVE & FACING PAGE: While we were designing and building the Shades of Gray Modern Farmhouse, we used the site's environment to influence our decisions. Although the lot isn't wide, it
stretches far back and features a fishing pond with sections of lush, large trees. We included sightlines to the water in each bedroom, so the natural environment isn't forgotten once inside the home.
American farmhouses have seen a revival of interest, and you'll find those aspects throughout the house, along with numerous contemporary elements. The generously sized covered f ront porch
includes modern horizontal siding mixed with traditional exposed rafters. Material selection for the entire home was critical—we wanted to add texture. You'll notice engineered white-oak floors,
Shaker-style kitchen cabinet doors, and simple drawers that help to achieve a clean look. The living room and hearth room are divided by a stacked-stone two-way fireplace that serves as the central
point of the home and partitions the expansive space to create intimacy.
