ABOVE & FACING PAGE: Although this desert house in Palm Springs, California, is only 5,000 square feet, it has significant presence against the nearby mountains that
rise precipitously in the background. Perched 50 feet above street level on a narrow plateau and 750 feet above the valley floor, its scissor-like composition echoes the
shape of the mountains and gives the house its distinctive profile. Due to seismic instability, the structure had to be anchored to its hilltop site with steel pilings and
concrete footings.
