ABOVE & LEFT: Capturing the feeling of being on the ocean, this home is set in the center of historic Washington, D.C. The primary
aesthetic sought the vastness of sky and ocean in an urban setting. The south-facing home includes an array of unique features such
as a rooftop pool, trellises for shade, and a glass elevator that goes to all four floors. As infinite as a seascape, the minimalist glass design
extends sightlines to the surrounding environment. With this home, as with many others, I found myself searching for ancient solutions
in a modern idiom. Heavy ductwork flanks the kitchen like airplane wings, and a time-tested Japanese technique of burnt wood serves
as a naturalist sealant.
